Phone calls from the Beyond?

The Journal of Scientific Exploration has just published my essay review of a recent book on a highly intriguing phenomenon: phone calls that seem to be coming from dead loved ones. This phenomenon–which might seem laughable at first–is surprisingly prevalent. And there’s a lot more to it than you might expect. It’s not just cases where, for example, a cell phone identifies the caller as a deceased person but no one is at the other end of the line. In not a few cases, there is a voice at the other end of the line, and a living person is actually able to hold a conversation with them.

The book that explores all of this–Laurent Kasprowicz’s Des coups de fil de l’AU-DELA ?–is currently only available in French, but I’ve written a fairly lengthy review in order to give non-French speakers a good idea of the sorts of cases the author has collected (17 in all) and the theories he considers as possible explanations for these strange occurrences. Kasprowicz does not, for instance, automatically accept the explanation that these phone calls are produced by the dead. He points out that, in each case, there seems to be some small detail that doesn’t quite jive with this explanation–“le détail qui cloche,” Kasprowicz calls it–and for this reason, he explores alternative possibilities, including psychokinesis on the part of the living as well as the influence of the Trickster archetype.

Those of you who would like to read my full review can access it for free here. Those of you who read French and would like to acquire Kasprowicz’s book can order it from him by contacting him through his Facebook page.

  1. Sharon, I am reading your book and see no reference to Dolores Cannon’s work or books, i.e., The Convoluted Universe series. Given the extensity of your research, this surprises me. Is it a question of her credibility? I’d really be interested in your views of her hypnosis style and past life regression work. Thanks. Be Well. Best wishes, Gordon

    1. Hi, Gordon! My emphasis in The Source and Significance of Coincidences was on first-hand experiences, rather than any material elicited through hypnosis or channeling. The reliability of the latter two sources is notoriously variable. While I think hypnosis may be useful for suggesting potential information, I would never trust it without independent corroboration. As yet, I have not investigated Dolores Cannon’s work in particular. But thanks for your comment!

    2. Sharon – I am very interested in this subject since I believe I’ve rec’d phone calls from my deceased brother on several occasions. Have been following you and your work thru CCBB.
I read any books I can find on Coincidence/Synchronicity. Your memoir is going to be my summer read. Would appreciate knowing when/if this book on phone calls from the dead by the Frenchman is translated into English. Love your work!….-Mary

      1. I will definitely post if an English translation of Kasprowicz’s book comes out. I think it would find a lot of eager readers. Also, Kasprowicz is still collecting cases, in the hopes of writing a second book. He would love to hear from you about your experiences. You can either find him on Facebook or email me (my address is on my About page) and I’ll forward it along to him. Hope you enjoy my memoir!
